Sanjay Gopinath Punekar is a contemporary Indian visual artist whose practice explores the relationship between nature, spirituality, human experience

and the inner world of dreams and imagination.

Born in 1979 in Rui–Indapur, Maharashtra, and based in the Delhi NCR, India, Punekar has developed his artistic practice over more than two decades.

His work is characterised by vibrant colour, expressive movement, layered textures, organic forms and semi-abstract compositions.

Rather than simply depicting the visible world, he explores the emotions, energies, memories and inner experiences that exist beneath it.

With a body of more than 200 original paintings, Punekar continues to develop a visual language that moves between representation and abstraction.

Each work evolves through a process of observation, intuition, imagination and experimentation,

inviting viewers to engage with the painting through their own perceptions and associations.

ARTISTIC PRACTICE

At the heart of Punekar’s practice is a continuous dialogue between the outer world of nature

and the inner world of human experience.

Nature remains one of his most enduring sources of inspiration. Landscapes, animals, birds, water, organic forms,

movement and natural rhythms often provide the initial impulse for a work. Yet his intention is not to reproduce nature literally.

Instead, he transforms observed forms, atmospheres and energies into visual experiences that move

between recognition and abstraction.

His paintings explore ideas of harmony, turbulence, transformation, silence, energy,

consciousness and emotional connection. Through colour, texture, layering and expressive mark-making,

Punekar allows the painting to develop intuitively, creating works

that are intended to be experienced as much through feeling and perception as through intellectual interpretation.

NATURE, SPIRITUALITY & INNER DREAMS

Punekar’s relationship with nature extends beyond its physical appearance.

For him, nature becomes a visual language through which deeper human experiences can be explored. A flowing form may suggest

movement or emotional release; an animal may evoke instinct, strength or freedom; while a landscape may gradually

transform into an inner state of mind.

Spirituality enters his practice as an inward experience of awareness, contemplation, silence, transformation and connection,

rather than as a representation of any specific religious narrative.

Dreams and imagination are equally important to his creative process. Images, forms and ideas may emerge from dreams, memories,

emotions or intuitive impressions and become starting points for new works.

His paintings therefore occupy a space between what is seen and what is felt, between the external world and the inner self.

MATERIAL, COLOUR & PROCESS

Punekar works primarily with acrylic on canvas, while also exploring watercolour, drawing and mixed-media approaches.

His process is intuitive and layered. Paint may be built up, reworked, scraped, textured and transformed as a composition

develops. Colour and surface are not simply descriptive elements; they become active participants in the formation of the work.

His palette ranges from intense reds, blues, greens and yellows to quieter atmospheric and earthy tones. Colour is used to

establish energy, rhythm, tension, harmony and emotional depth.

Texture gives the paintings physical presence, while expressive marks and organic forms introduce movement,

ambiguity and discovery.

Alongside painting, his practice includes drawing and watercolour landscape work, allowing him to respond to observation and

experience through different degrees of fluidity, immediacy and abstraction.

AN EVOLVING ARTISTIC JOURNEY

Punekar’s formal education includes a Five-Year Government Diploma in Fine Art, completed in 2003,

followed by a Diploma in Art Education in 2004. He later completed his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in 2015–16.

Over more than two decades, his practice has evolved through sustained studio work, observation, experimentation

and engagement with different materials and approaches.

His artistic journey encompasses acrylic painting, watercolour, drawing, mixed media and semi-abstraction,

with recurring explorations of nature, animals, spirituality, human experience and inner landscapes.

Rather than following a predetermined visual formula, Punekar allows each body of work—and ultimately

each individual painting—to develop its own direction.

This openness to process is central to the distinctive character of his practice.

FOLK & TRIBAL ART INFLUENCE

Growing up in Maharashtra, Punekar was also exposed to the visual traditions of the region, including the

distinctive language of Warli painting, a tribal art tradition of Maharashtra.

The simplicity of its forms, rhythmic lines, human and animal figures, and close relationship with nature

have influenced aspects of his visual thinking.

This influence appears selectively in some of his works,

where elements of folk imagery, simplified forms and rhythmic mark-making enter into his contemporary

visual language Rather than reproducing Warli painting directly,

Punekar reinterprets aspects of this tradition through his own exploration of nature,

human experience, spirituality and imagination.

ARTIST & EDUCATOR

Alongside his professional studio practice, Punekar has developed a long-standing career in art education.

Since April 2014, he has served as a Permanent PRT Art & Craft Teacher at Delhi Public School Greater Faridabad.

His experience as an educator has deepened his understanding of creativity, observation, experimentation and visual expression.

Teaching and studio practice have developed alongside one another, giving him complementary perspectives on art

: the experience of creating and the experience of encouraging others to discover their own creative possibilities.

This dual role as artist and educator remains an important part of his professional identity.

EXHIBITIONS & INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE

Punekar has presented his work through solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, art fairs and international art platforms.

His exhibition journey includes presentations at venues and art spaces across India, alongside international participation

and exhibition opportunities In 2026,

he presented his solo exhibition Where Silence Breathes at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi,

bringing together works exploring nature, inner energy, silence and emotional landscapes.

He also participated in Huntenkunst Art Fair, Ulft, Netherlands, in May 2026, marking an important

step in his international exhibition journey.

His work was also selected for the 28th Community Art Exhibition by Circular ArtSpace, Bristol, UK,

where Mother and Child was selected.

Punekar’s work has also reached international audiences through online art platforms and artist networks,

including Saatchi Art, Artfinder, Singulart, Artsy and Artmajeur, alongside his own artist website.

STUDIO PRACTICE

For Punekar, the studio is a space of observation, experimentation and transformation.

A painting may begin with an image from nature, a memory, an emotion, an intuitive gesture or an image emerging from a dream.

From this initial impulse, the work develops through an ongoing dialogue between the artist, the idea and the surface.

Layers are added and removed. Forms emerge and disappear. Colours interact. Unexpected marks become part of the composition.

This intuitive process allows each painting to retain traces of its own development.

The finished work is therefore not simply an image, but a record of observation, imagination, emotion and transformation.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“I see painting as a journey between the outer world and the inner self. Nature gives me a language of colour, movement,

rhythm and transformation, while spirituality leads me towards silence, awareness and introspection. Human experience,

memory and dreams further shape what I imagine and create. Through my paintings, I try to bring these worlds together

allowing colour to become emotion, texture to become memory, and form to become a reflection of what is experienced within.”

CURRENT PRACTICE

Today, Sanjay Punekar continues to work from the Delhi NCR while developing new bodies of work and expanding his engagement with

international exhibitions, galleries, collectors and art platforms.

His current practice continues to investigate the space between abstraction and recognition, nature and consciousness, movement and stillness.

Each new painting becomes an opportunity to explore different relationships between colour, texture, form and emotion. Drawing, watercolour and

landscape studies continue to complement his larger painting practice.

Rather than repeating an established formula, Punekar allows each work to develop independently. The subject, medium, colour and process may change

from one painting to another, allowing every canvas to acquire its own visual and emotional character.

For Punekar, painting remains an ongoing journey—a way of observing the world, exploring the self and creating a visual language

for experiences that cannot always be expressed through words.
