ARTIST PROFILE

Sanjay Punekar is a contemporary Indian visual artist whose practice explores the intimate relationship between nature, spirituality, and the inner landscapes of human experience. Based in the Delhi NCR, he has devoted more than two decades to developing a distinctive semi-abstract visual language shaped by colour, texture, movement, and emotional energy.

Alongside his studio practice, Punekar is a Master of Fine Arts and an experienced art educator, bringing together artistic research, teaching, and continuous studio experimentation. His long-standing engagement with art has shaped a practice grounded in observation, intuition, and a deep sensitivity to the natural world.

Today, he continues to work from the Delhi NCR, developing new bodies of work while expanding his presence through exhibitions, international art platforms, and relationships with collectors.

ARTISTIC PRACTICE

At the heart of Punekar’s practice is a dialogue between the outer world of nature and the inner world of human experience. Landscapes, animals, birds, water, organic forms and natural rhythms become starting points rather than subjects to be reproduced literally.

Through colour, layered texture, expressive mark-making and intuitive movement, he transforms these observations into semi-abstract visual experiences. His paintings explore harmony, turbulence, transformation, silence, energy and consciousness, inviting viewers to experience the work beyond a single fixed interpretation.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Nature, spirituality, human experience, and the images that emerge from my dreams are at the heart of my artistic practice. I am inspired by the forms, rhythms and energies of the natural world, by the emotions and experiences of being human, and by the inner images that emerge through dreams, imagination and contemplation.

I try to bring these experiences onto the canvas rather than simply reproduce what I see. A landscape, a human presence, an animal, a colour, a memory or an imagined form may become the starting point for a painting. From there, the work develops intuitively through colour, texture, movement and expressive mark-making.

I do not begin every painting with a fixed visual formula. Each canvas evolves in its own direction, allowing its colours, forms, textures and emotional character to emerge through the process. This is why every painting becomes different—each one is a personal journey between what I observe, what I imagine, what I feel and what I experience within.

THEMES & VISUAL LANGUAGE

I work across painting, drawing and watercolour, allowing each medium to become a different way of observing and expressing the world. Acrylic on canvas gives me the freedom to build colour, texture and depth; watercolour allows a more fluid and spontaneous response, while drawing offers a direct connection between thought, observation and form. I choose the medium according to the idea and feeling I want to explore, allowing landscapes, organic forms and imagined imagery to evolve naturally through observation, memory, intuition and dreams.

NATURE

The natural world is a continual source of forms, rhythms, movement and energy. Landscapes, animals, birds, water and organic structures often become starting points for my paintings.

SPIRITUALITY

Spirituality enters my work through contemplation, inner awareness and a search for a deeper connection between the visible world and what is experienced within.

HUMAN EXPERIENCE

Emotion, memory, imagination and lived experience influence the way I see and interpret the world, becoming part of the emotional character of each painting.
